Field Notes • Rohan & Kavya

Photographing the Mandap

ESSAY 02 • FIELD NOTES • PHOTOGRAPHY BY MONISH KUMAR

"A ceremony doesn’t wait for anyone. The trick is to already be where the moment is going."

Rohan & Kavya standing at either end of a wall of carved gold

The mandap was a wall of carved gold, hung with jasmine and flowers. Kavya in red silk, Rohan in ivory, and family on every side. It was beautiful, it was crowded, and nothing happened twice.

I don’t stop the rituals for photographs. I move early, stay low, and let shoulders and garlands fall into the frame. When the rice went up into the air, I was already facing the right way.

Rohan & Kavya before the carved gold backdrop, hands folded, smiling

Between the loud moments there are quiet ones: hands joined over red silk and jasmine, a glance while the rites go on, a smile nobody asked for. Those are the ones I watch for most.

By the end of the day there were tears as well, the goodbyes that close every wedding. That is the rest of their story. Read their full story.
