"Some places tell half the story before anyone arrives. You just leave them room."
The field was empty: red earth, a few trees along the edge, a pale sky with no hard shadows. There was nothing to arrange and nothing to hide behind, which is exactly why it worked. Two people in red silk and white cotton, and all that space around them.
I did very little directing. They stood apart, then closer, then held hands and walked. Most of the frames that matter came from simply waiting at a distance and letting them forget the camera for a while.
Then a train crossed the horizon behind them. There is no planning for a moment like that; there is only being ready when it comes. It passed in a few seconds, and it is one of the photographs they will keep longest.
Years from now, when they look at these pictures, they will not remember a photographer giving directions. They will remember the open field, the pale light, and a train that seemed to arrive just for them. Read their full story.
